so, we had our first play pratice on tuesday. it was about three hours. the entire cast, jim, and i read through the play and we talked in detail afterwards about the characters, the theme, and where we were coming from when we were writing it. while reading out loud it seemed so much more fluent and i also noted that there were a few things i needed to get done asap.
stop animation videos of water/fire/and the thoughts of one character (briel) . also, i need to make a crown of bees for sadie, and a wrist of removable flowers for lune. i got the materials for this last night and will start working on them this weekend.
as for the show in september goes, i ordered the vinyl for the installations and have a very confident outline of how i want things displayed. i went to home depot last night and got about 8 gallons of paint, some “oops paint and some regular nice behr or ralph lauren paint. it was 170 dollars. :( so, i think if i need more i will space it out a bit… so it doesn’t kill my finances even though my finances are killed as of now anyway. in sarah’s class i have been doing a lot of drawings that will be painted on the walls of the gallery and everything else will be haning from twine or wire from the tops. i find it amusing that i will say “i hung the show” since it is about my brother who hung himself. i am sick like that.
so, here are some pictures:

so this first one is the other 4×4 that i have been working on. it needs more work. this will be the second painting in the visual fringe show.

next is a shitty photo of the poster the way that i wanted the postcard to be…. it looks way better. i also have postcards for you if you want them.

then this is the film strips that i have been sewing together. it is from a 18mm film canister that said “submarines” but the first ones i started sewing had the words “the atomic era” on some frames.

and the molds are made. i did as much research as one could do as to how to put the molds together. used a casing of legos, clay, and saran wrap so the silicone didn’t leak. poured the molds and they work pretty great. i still want a more detailed look, but this will do the job for this time.

here are the hands that i used to make the mold with as well as the cast hands and the cast “flying guy”.

so, that is what i have for you. will update soon.

and from above:
CLick
i am thinking of putting the titles in fishing wire from one display of memory to the next, to kindof reiterate the non-linear and connectivity of the memories.

so, this weekend was the show in lafayette. i sold four pieces! i feel a bit used, though. honestly, i priced my work even lower than the cost of materials. but, since i anticipated the selling fiasco, i a. made an agreement with each buyer that i have the rights to photgraph it at any time b. rented a nikon d40 from our local camera shop and took some photos for my grad portfolio:
painting
so, there is the reworked 4×4, but much better represented. i really want this camera. :(

wordpress just kindof elongated the image , so if you want to see the true image click.here

thanks, you are the best.

since i had such a fancy camera for two days, i decided to do some stop animation. i cannot have a video plugin here at wordpress, according to them “for security reasons”. so, here is a link to the 30 second video i did on sunday. here is a link to
the video
i love doing this stuff and i think i will borrow cameras to do a lot more

i don’t think that it is the best i can do, so i really want to revisit it. jim must have liked it as well… he linked it herehereandhere

okay, so an check in with the proposal:
*rehearsals are scheduled to happen after july 15th
*set design/video schematics will start then as well
*i have been working on the set up for the show as well as drawing up concepts for more molds
*umber press is ready to go. here is the submission for writer’s market:

magazine needs: umber press is a quarterly magazine that is handbound with artistic uniqueness. we welcome submissions that express anything raw. we look for complex and clever, emotional and narrative, conceptual and thin, humorous and dark. we welcome strong work.

how to submit: submit 3-6 poems. submissions accepted from july through september. no previously published poems. simultaneous submissions okay (with notice). cover letter required. email submissions okay. seldom comments on rejections. pays one copy, additionaly copies for those that are published are discounted. time between acceptance and publication is two months. please email umberpress@gmail.com for questions.

the editors of writer’s market said that new entries were due in march for this august release. so, i submitted my entry for next years release.

next projects are:
starting the drawings that will be on the walls
executing the molds with rtv silicone
designing postcards for the show
compiling the first publication of umber press, since its delay from the public i will just publish …..me

i have a lot left on my plate…..

hello. below are pictures of what i have been doing for the last month. most of it is trying to make molds for the solo show in september at big car gallery.

first things first; the play

here is a link to the website
there is an excerpt of the play and the image i drew for the play/website

the following image is of the business (if you want to call them business) cards that i made for us to give to people involved with the play. again, the bed (lune’s bed to be precise) and i wanted it to look like a mcsweeney’s thing. (http://mcsweeneys.net/) i wanted it to be clear (in contrast to the work i usually do) where the work didn’t interfere with the message…

what follows is a movie still image from the stop animation movie that i did that will be projected onto the stage when the play is performed. i have a lot to add to this mere 2min loop and i still need to aqcuire imovie to do it. as soon as that is sorted out i will host the image on youtube to that i can insert it into the website etc.

so, other than the writing of the play, that is all that i have done for the play, really. things seem to be rolling in that area on its own.

here are some images of the molds that i made. i couldn’t rationalize spending 40 dollors for 12 oz of rtv silicone so i did some attempts with :

siicone rubber (caulk) from the hardware store:

and a latex rubber mold from the craft store:

both were pretty unstable and didn’t create the molds that i particularly wanted. i also got this 9 dollar stuff called ‘mix-a-mold’ and it worked well…. for two castings. regardless, what follows are the plaster/resin casts that i created with the three previously stated molds.

two owls, both resin. one painted brown, one left clear. inside the clear one are pricetags.

using the mix a mold i shoved my fingers in. i think they are creeepy and i like them.

here are the fingers and the front and backs of the owls that i cast. all of these are plaster.

so, based on that i was not terribly happy with the results i have gone and purchased quality rtv silicone rubber. now that i know it costs so much, and will produce hopefully perfect molds i have taken my time with what i am putting into the mold. i got air hardening clay and made these two forms:

notice munchkin in the background….

the figure will eventually be holding a piece of cake. this is not my best medium but i am giving it a shot. the other form is representative of this:

and the end product will be similar. i want to cover the floor of the gallery with little figures like the above five casts.

well, there is one more thing. i was asked to be in a show for june 23rd and had to hurry and finish a painting. i had this old one from nickolsons and i worked on it for a week straight and this is the finished produckt. it is 4ft by 4ft. i have to say, for the first time, the real one looks better than the photo. i am really happy with it, though:

well, that is what i have been up to since we last spoke. see you round.
